A tree that's been cut down is only half the job. The stump left behind trips people, attracts insects, keeps sprouting new growth, and makes mowing a chore. Tree Sons grinds it below grade so your yard is flat, safe and ready to use.

Why you don't want to leave a stump in the yard

  • Trip hazard — especially for kids and guests who don't know it's there
  • Pest and termite magnet — decaying wood draws insects that can move toward the house
  • Stump sprouts — many species keep sending up new shoots until the root system is gone or starved
  • Blocks mowing and landscaping — you work around it every single time
  • Eyesore — dead wood in the middle of a lawn looks neglected and brings down curb appeal
  • Liability — a hidden stump in grass is a fall waiting to happen
Adding stump grinding to a removal? Bundle it in at estimate time and we'll sequence the work together — saves a separate mobilization and gets everything done in one visit.

What stump grinding actually does

Grinding is not full stump removal. We use a purpose-built grinder to bring the main stump down to about two inches beneath the ground. What's left is a hole filled with wood chip grindings. The surface can be raked level, or we can remove the grinding debris for an additional fee.

This is different from digging the whole root ball out, which is far more disruptive and expensive. For most situations, grinding the main stump is the practical, cost-effective choice — and that's what we do.
