A tree that's trimmed well is a tree that lives longer, grows stronger, and stays out of your way. Whether it's branches scraping the roof, dead limbs you've been watching all winter, or a canopy so thick it's blocking your whole yard — Tree Sons handles it right the first time.

Why regular trimming matters

  • Removes dead, diseased or dying branches before they fall on the house or someone below
  • Clears branches touching the roof, gutters, siding or utility lines — the most common cause of preventable damage
  • Opens the canopy so more light reaches your lawn and garden
  • Improves the shape and long-term structure of the tree
  • Reduces weight and wind resistance — important before storm season
  • Keeps pests and disease from spreading through crowded branches
Not sure if it's trimming or removal? We'll look at the tree honestly and tell you what it actually needs. We never push a removal when a good trim will do the job.

When to call us for trimming

  • Crossing, rubbing or dead branches anywhere in the canopy
  • Branches within 10 feet of the roof, chimney or power service line
  • Overgrown trees blocking light to the house, lawn or garden
  • Young trees you want shaped before they get big
  • Storm prep — lightening the canopy before a busy season
  • Routine maintenance on a 3–5 year cycle to keep trees healthy

Our approach — what we actually do

We prune the right way — cutting to healthy branch unions, not leaving stubs, and not overdoing it. Here's what the different techniques mean:

  • Crown thinning — selectively removing interior branches to open the canopy, improve airflow, and let light through without changing the tree's shape
  • Crown raising — removing the lowest branches to create clearance for the roof, siding, gutters, driveway or lawn below
  • Crown reduction — carefully reducing the overall size of the canopy while preserving the tree's natural form — not topping, which is harmful
  • Deadwooding — removing all dead, dying or structurally weak wood from the canopy — the single most important safety job in any tree

We focus on healthy, structural pruning — not "topping" (cutting branches back to stubs), which damages a tree, creates weak regrowth, and can shorten its life.

Tree Trimming FAQs

What is the best time of year to trim trees in Massachusetts?
Late winter, while trees are dormant, is ideal for most species — but we handle hazards and storm damage any time.
How often should trees be trimmed?
Most shade trees do well on a 3–5 year cycle. Ornamentals and fruit trees may need attention every 1–2 years. We'll tell you what makes sense for your specific trees when we come out for the estimate.
Will trimming hurt my tree?
Not when it's done right. We remove dead, diseased or unwanted branches to keep your trees healthy and looking their best — we'll walk you through exactly what we'd do at your free estimate.
Do you trim branches near power lines?
Yes — we clear branches from service lines running to your house. The utility company is responsible for the primary distribution lines on the street; we handle everything on the customer side. When in doubt, we'll walk you through who handles what.
